Walmart to Raise Wages for 425,000 Workers After Massive 2020 Sales Performance

Walmart announced it will raise wages for 425,000 store associates serving in “frontline” roles after the company reported record fourth-quarter revenue.

Walmart will increase starting wages to between $13 and $19 per hour depending on store location and market, according to a letter Walmart President and CEO John Furner sent to employees nationwide Thursday morning. The pay raises will begin on March 13 and apply to the company’s 425,000 store associates.

“Today, I’m happy to share an investment in the people who are central to making that happen,” Furner wrote in the letter.

“Whatever your role, know that we’ll continue to support and invest in you,” he continued.

The American big-box retailer reported a record $152.1 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, a 7.3% increase compared to last year, on Thursday. Walmart’s revenue increase was driven by e-commerce sales, which increased 69% compared to last year.

While Walmart’s average wage will now exceed $15 per hour, the company’s starting wage for U.S. employees will stay at $11 per hour, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Although companies like Walmart and Amazon were able to generate record revenues in 2020, many small businesses were crushed due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the middle of the pandemic 45 out of the 50 most valuable public corporations profited, even as the U.S. unemployment rate jumped to a record 14.7%.

Small business revenue plummeted 30.5% as of Feb. 4 compared to January 2020, according to Harvard University’s Economic Tracker. Between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2020, about 30% of U.S. small businesses closed.

“These are times when the strong can get stronger,” Nike Chief Executive Officer John Donahoe said on a September conference call, the WSJ reported.

The economy shrank 3.5% in 2020, according to a Jan. 28 Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) report, the worst performance since the 1940s. The U.S. also recorded its sharpest rise in poverty since the 1960s when the poverty rate spiked to 11.8% in December.

Good for Wal Mart. Run a good business, make lots of money and then even share some of that money with the employees that made the success happen. Unlike a number of small businesswhiners, trying to compete in a poorly chosen market and leaning on the government for another “forgivable” PPP loan.

So all of the prices will go up permanently based upon 2020 when Walmart benefitted at the expense of their customers dealing with COVID. Now that really makes no sense at all. How about just lowering prices if Walmart is “embarrassed” at the windfall profits? That would help all of their customers.
